Welcome to the Black Dot Project blog. The purpose of this blog is to serve as documention of all Black Dot interventions. The purpose of these art and media literacy interventions is to teach children to think critically about the various aspects of advertising, branding, and marketing, with a particular focus on the advertising and marketing of unhealthy junk foods and sugary cereals. Children who participate in the interventions engage in a range of activities, including art criticism, basic printmaking processes, collage, graphic design, and creative writing. They also play with a giant (6 foot) black ball!
Prior interventions have taken place at elementary schools in Amesville, Ohio and Berkeley, California. The next intervention will begin on March 23 at the West After School Center in Lancaster, Ohio. The documentation of this intervention will begin shortly thereafter.
In the meanwhile, the following posts will describe the origins of the Black Dot Project, as well as describe the Amesville intervention.
Happy reading!
